Friends of Sullivan's Island School was formed to provide financial support to Sullivan's Island Elementary School in the areas of teacher salaries, instructional and educational supplies.
Each school in the Charleston County School District receives a mandated amount of funding based on certain strict formulas; however, that allocation does not meet the needs of our students.
Friends has helped bridge the gap between being a good school and a great school by providing funds to:
- maintain smaller class sizes
- lower overall student-to-teacher ratios
- offer a rigorous and innovative curriculum
- hire, retain and develop highly skilled faculty and professional staff, ensuring more special area teachers for foreign language, science, arts, music and computer technology.
Specifically, Friends provided funding for a portion of computer, music and art and gifted and talented instruction as well as foreign language instruction for a Spanish program in grades K-3 during the 2008-2009 school year.
